The announcement comes as Houthi forces have made important advances in several strategic areas of Yemen, including territory around the Red Sea coast and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
The Bab el-Mandeb is one of the world's strategically important maritime passages, linking the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden. Control of the area carries major implications for international shipping and regional security.
Yemen's government has vowed to continue its offensive against the Houthis and called on regional and international partners to support its forces. Saudi Arabia has also indicated that it will take necessary measures in support of the internationally recognised Yemeni government.
The escalation comes after the Houthis recently made gains around the strategic city of Taiz. Military sources have reported that Houthi forces advanced towards key routes connecting Taiz with government-held areas, raising concerns that the city could face increased pressure or even an effective siege.
Taiz is one of Yemen's most important cities and has remained divided during years of conflict. Any further deterioration around the city could create serious consequences for civilians and humanitarian operations.
At the same time, the Houthis have claimed missile and drone attacks against targets in Saudi Arabia, including facilities linked to Saudi Aramco. The group has said the attacks were carried out in response to Saudi-led military operations in Yemen, although some of the claims have not been independently verified.
The latest fighting represents a major deterioration after a period in which the conflict had remained comparatively quieter. Yemen's civil war has continued for more than a decade, with the Houthis controlling the capital Sanaa and large parts of the country's north and west.
The conflict has also developed into a wider regional security issue because of the involvement of Saudi Arabia, Iran, the United States and other international actors.
The strategic importance of Yemen has increased further because of the country's position along major shipping routes. Any prolonged fighting around the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb could create additional risks for commercial vessels and international trade.
The humanitarian consequences are also a major concern. Continued fighting could displace more civilians, restrict access to food and essential supplies, and further damage already fragile infrastructure.
The latest offensive therefore represents a significant turning point in Yemen's conflict, particularly as government forces attempt to reverse recent Houthi advances.
VoS STRATEGIC INSIGHT
Yemen's new military campaign could significantly reshape the balance of power inside the country. If government forces and their regional allies succeed in reversing Houthi territorial gains, the development could alter control of strategically important areas.
However, an expanded military confrontation also carries serious risks. Fighting around Taiz and other densely populated areas could increase civilian suffering and make humanitarian access more difficult.
The situation is particularly significant for international security because Yemen sits beside some of the world's most important maritime routes. Further escalation around the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb could have consequences extending far beyond Yemen's borders.
For the international community, the immediate challenge will be balancing security concerns with efforts to prevent a wider regional escalation and protect civilians caught in the conflict.
