Vatican Envoy Begins First-Ever Pakistan Visit, Focusing on Peace and Interfaith Harmony

VoS NEWS DESK | INTERNATIONAL | 8 OCTOBER 2026

The visit has been arranged at the invitation of Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar and represents an important diplomatic engagement between Islamabad and the Holy See. Gallagher is expected to hold discussions with Pakistani leadership on matters of mutual interest, including interfaith harmony, dialogue, peace and regional and international developments.

Archbishop Gallagher is also expected to meet Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif during his stay in Pakistan. His schedule includes engagement with members of Pakistan’s Catholic community, providing an opportunity to discuss religious cooperation and issues affecting Christian communities in the country.

The timing of the visit carries additional significance because Pakistan and the Holy See established diplomatic relations in 1951. Seventy-five years later, both sides are using the anniversary to reaffirm their commitment to dialogue, mutual understanding and cooperation.

Interfaith harmony is expected to remain one of the central themes of Gallagher’s discussions. Pakistan and the Vatican have repeatedly emphasised the importance of religious dialogue and peaceful coexistence, particularly at a time when conflicts and political tensions continue to affect different parts of the world.

Regional and international developments will also feature in the diplomatic discussions. Gallagher’s portfolio places him at the centre of the Holy See’s relations with governments and international organisations, giving the visit significance beyond purely religious affairs.

The Vatican official’s engagement with Pakistan’s leadership could also provide an opportunity to explore broader cooperation in areas such as peacebuilding, humanitarian concerns and intercultural understanding.

For Pakistan, the visit represents an opportunity to strengthen relations with the Holy See while highlighting the country’s diplomatic engagement with international religious and political institutions.

For the Vatican, the visit comes at a significant moment in its relationship with Pakistan and provides an opportunity to deepen dialogue with the Pakistani government and Catholic community.

The Foreign Office has described the visit as an important milestone in the longstanding relationship between Pakistan and the Holy See. It said the two sides share a commitment to strengthening mutual understanding, cooperation and trust, while promoting peace and interfaith harmony.

As Archbishop Gallagher continues his meetings in Pakistan, attention will focus on whether the discussions lead to stronger diplomatic cooperation and renewed initiatives promoting religious dialogue and peace.

VoS STRATEGIC INSIGHT

The Vatican envoy’s first visit to Pakistan at this level carries significance well beyond protocol. It comes at a time when interfaith dialogue, regional stability and international cooperation are increasingly important diplomatic priorities.

The 75th anniversary of Pakistan–Holy See relations provides both sides with an opportunity to strengthen an established diplomatic relationship while expanding cooperation around peace, dialogue and religious understanding. Gallagher’s meetings with senior Pakistani officials could therefore help establish a stronger framework for future engagement.
