The annual UN General Assembly has brought together presidents, prime ministers, ministers and diplomats from all 193 UN member states at a time of significant international tensions. According to the United Nations, this year's high-level week is addressing a broad range of issues, including conflicts and international security, climate change, pandemic preparedness, sea-level rise, racism and progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals.
The wars and security crises affecting different regions remain among the central subjects of discussions. Ukraine, Gaza and the wider Middle East situation are receiving considerable attention as governments discuss international security, humanitarian concerns and diplomatic efforts.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres, speaking at the opening of the General Debate on 22 September, said that geopolitical divisions had deepened and called for greater international cooperation. He also highlighted the challenges created by climate change, inequality and the rapid development of artificial intelligence.
The Secretary-General also urged world leaders to use the high-level week to promote de-escalation and dialogue, particularly in relation to conflicts in the Middle East. He called for an end to fighting, increased humanitarian assistance and respect for international law and navigational rights.
The situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territory and Gaza is another major issue at the Assembly. The UN Secretary-General referred to the continuing humanitarian crisis and stressed that parties involved in the conflict should comply with international law and relevant decisions and orders of international institutions.
The war in Ukraine is also part of the wider security discussions taking place during the Assembly. The gathering provides an opportunity for governments to present their positions and hold bilateral meetings alongside the formal General Debate. Reports from the UN week indicate that the broader international security environment and changing geopolitical relationships are important themes throughout the meetings.
Artificial intelligence has emerged as another increasingly important international issue. During the UN week, technology leaders have discussed the potential security implications of increasingly powerful AI systems, with calls for governments to cooperate on appropriate safeguards and international governance.
Climate change and environmental threats are also receiving dedicated attention. On 24 September, the General Assembly is holding a high-level plenary meeting addressing the existential threats posed by sea-level rise, with the UN calling for coordinated and adequately financed action.
The Assembly's agenda extends beyond immediate conflicts. A high-level meeting on pandemic prevention, preparedness and response is scheduled for 25 September, while later meetings will address racial justice and equality and the international campaign for the total elimination of nuclear weapons.
The current General Assembly therefore provides a major diplomatic platform where governments can discuss both immediate international crises and longer-term global challenges. Alongside formal speeches, leaders are holding bilateral and regional meetings intended to address security, economic, humanitarian and diplomatic matters.
