Russian Drone Strikes Hit Kyiv Bridges as Attacks Cause Major Disruption Across Ukraine

VoS NEWS DESK | INTERNATIONAL | 3 OCTOBER 2026

The overnight attacks forced the closure or partial closure of important bridges connecting parts of Kyiv, severely affecting movement across the city. The Southern Bridge and Paton Bridge were among the key routes affected, creating long traffic queues and significant disruption for motorists and public transport users.

The attacks demonstrate the continuing importance of infrastructure in the Russia–Ukraine war. Bridges, energy facilities, transport networks and industrial sites remain strategically significant because damage to them can affect both military logistics and civilian life.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on international partners to strengthen sanctions against Russia, arguing that restrictions should make it more difficult for Moscow to obtain components needed for its weapons programme.

The latest attacks were not limited to Kyiv. Ukrainian officials reported strikes affecting several regions, including Kherson, Kharkiv, Kramatorsk and Sumy. Reports indicated that residential and civilian locations were among the areas affected, while Ukrainian authorities also reported casualties.

Russia's Ministry of Defence said its forces had targeted infrastructure that it considered connected to Ukrainian military activity. Russian authorities also reported Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory.

Ukraine has increasingly used drones to target Russian military and energy infrastructure, while Russia has continued its large-scale aerial campaign against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.

The continuing exchange of drone strikes illustrates how unmanned systems have become a central feature of the conflict. Both sides have invested heavily in drones because they can be deployed over long distances and used for surveillance, attacks and disruption.

For Kyiv's residents, however, the immediate consequences are often practical rather than military. Damage to bridges and other infrastructure can make travelling across the city significantly more difficult, disrupt public services and place additional pressure on emergency and transport systems.

The attacks also come as European governments continue to discuss sanctions and measures aimed at limiting Russia's ability to sustain its military production. Ukrainian officials have repeatedly urged allies to increase economic pressure and restrict access to technology and components that can be used in weapons manufacturing.

The wider conflict continues to affect international energy markets, European security and diplomatic relations between Russia, Ukraine and Western governments.

As attacks continue, the condition of critical infrastructure is likely to remain a major concern for Ukrainian authorities, particularly as the country prepares for another winter under wartime conditions.

VoS STRATEGIC INSIGHT

The latest attacks underline the growing role of drone warfare and critical infrastructure in the Russia–Ukraine conflict. The disruption to Kyiv's bridges demonstrates how attacks on transport infrastructure can affect civilian movement even when the immediate military objective is disputed. Ukraine's call for stronger sanctions also shows that the conflict continues to have a significant diplomatic and economic dimension alongside the fighting.
