North Korea’s Kim Jong Un and Vladimir Putin Reaffirm Strong Ties

Kim’s message to Putin came as North Korea marked the 81st anniversary of Korea’s liberation. According to North Korean state media, Kim emphasised the historical ties between the two countries and expressed hope that their cooperation would continue to expand. Putin similarly highlighted the relationship between Moscow and Pyongyang, pointing to cooperation across a range of sectors.

Relations between North Korea and Russia have strengthened significantly in recent years, particularly since Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine. North Korea has provided military support to Russia, including weapons and personnel, according to Ukrainian and Western officials. The growing partnership has raised concerns among the United States, South Korea and other countries over the possibility of deeper military cooperation between the two governments.

The latest exchange between Kim and Putin comes amid wider geopolitical tensions in Europe and East Asia. Russia continues its war in Ukraine, while North Korea maintains a large military programme and has repeatedly rejected international pressure over its nuclear and missile development. The two countries’ increasingly close cooperation has therefore become an important factor in regional security calculations.

A Russian naval vessel also made a goodwill visit to North Korea’s Wonsan port during the liberation anniversary celebrations, further highlighting the developing relationship between the two countries. Meanwhile, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung used the occasion to call for renewed dialogue between Seoul and Pyongyang and greater efforts towards peace on the Korean Peninsula. North Korea, however, has continued to reject South Korean overtures while criticising US-South Korean military exercises.

The strengthening Russia-North Korea partnership is also being closely watched because of its potential implications for the Ukraine conflict. Moscow benefits from military support from Pyongyang, while North Korea can gain diplomatic backing and potentially greater access to Russian economic and military expertise.
