AI Debt Wave Puts Global Markets Under Pressure as Tech Giants Seek Billions for Expansion

VoS NEWS DESK | BUSINESS & TECHNOLOGY | 8 OCTOBER 2026

Asian shares came under pressure on Thursday as investors assessed the growing scale of borrowing by major technology companies seeking billions of dollars to fund AI infrastructure, including advanced computing systems and AI chips.

The latest developments highlight how the extraordinary cost of building AI infrastructure is beginning to affect global financial markets. Companies that once relied heavily on internal cash flows are increasingly exploring debt markets and other forms of external financing to fund their expansion.

Broadcom, for example, is pursuing around $50 billion in financing, while SpaceX is reportedly considering a financing package involving approximately $30 billion in bonds and $10 billion in loans. The scale of these plans has raised questions about the risks associated with financing the AI boom through increasingly large amounts of debt.

The borrowing surge comes as technology companies race to secure enormous quantities of AI chips and computing capacity. The rapid development of AI models and data centres requires huge investments in electricity, specialised hardware and computing infrastructure.

SpaceX is reportedly considering borrowing around $40 billion to acquire advanced Nvidia chips, an amount approaching the company’s projected annual revenue. The proposal illustrates the extraordinary financial requirements involved in competing at the leading edge of AI infrastructure.

Investors are increasingly concerned about whether future revenues from AI will be sufficient to justify the enormous investments being made today. While the technology sector has generated strong growth expectations, the financial burden of building the necessary infrastructure is becoming increasingly visible.

The pressure is not limited to technology companies. Government bond markets are also experiencing strain as countries face high borrowing requirements, inflation concerns and large budget deficits.

Reuters reported that rising corporate borrowing is competing directly with governments for available funding, contributing to pressure across sovereign bond markets. Asian equities also weakened during Thursday’s trading session as investors assessed the broader financial implications.

The situation is particularly significant because the AI investment boom is occurring alongside elevated global interest rates and concerns about public debt. Higher borrowing costs can increase the expense of financing massive technology projects while simultaneously making government debt more expensive.

The International Monetary Fund has also warned about risks connected with the rapid AI expansion, rising debt and global economic pressures. IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva has urged governments to address debt vulnerabilities while preparing economies and workers for the effects of artificial intelligence.

Despite these concerns, investors and technology companies continue to pour money into AI because of expectations that the technology could transform productivity, business operations and economic growth.

The central question for markets is whether the anticipated economic benefits of AI will arrive quickly enough to justify the enormous levels of borrowing now being undertaken.

VoS STRATEGIC INSIGHT

The latest AI debt wave marks an important shift in the technology industry. AI is no longer simply a software investment story; it is becoming a major global capital-market story involving bonds, banks, sovereign debt and infrastructure financing.

If AI-generated revenues and productivity gains meet expectations, the enormous investment could support a new period of technological growth. However, if returns disappoint while borrowing costs remain high, highly leveraged AI projects could create broader financial risks.
