Rybakina appeared before spectators at the tournament venue in Tokyo to explain that she would not be able to play. Rather than taking part in the scheduled quarter-final, she addressed the crowd and signed autographs for fans who had gathered to watch the match. Her decision allowed Canadian player Leylah Fernandez to progress to the semi-finals through a walkover.
In a statement published on the WTA website, Rybakina explained that she had been experiencing inflammation and pain in her neck, which had affected her ability to perform at her best. She also thanked the supporters in Tokyo for their encouragement throughout the tournament and expressed disappointment at being unable to compete in front of them.
The withdrawal followed a major achievement in her career. Rybakina secured the year-end number one position after defeating fellow Kazakh player Yulia Putintseva 6–2, 6–3 in her opening match in Tokyo. The result confirmed her position at the top of the women's world rankings for the end of the 2026 season.
Her rise to the top has been supported by a highly successful year on the international tennis circuit. She won the Australian Open in January and later claimed the US Open title, adding to her previous Wimbledon victory in 2022. Her performances across the season have established her among the leading figures in women's tennis and brought her total Grand Slam titles to three.
Rybakina also arrived in Tokyo after winning the Ningbo Open in China, where she defeated Leylah Fernandez in the final. The two players were therefore scheduled to meet again in the Pan Pacific Open quarter-finals, but the Kazakh's injury prevented the contest from taking place.
The decision to withdraw reflects the importance of managing physical fitness during a demanding international season. With the WTA Finals approaching in November, Rybakina indicated that she wanted to avoid risking further injury by competing while unable to perform at full capacity. She has expressed the intention to return for the season-ending tournament, although her participation will depend on her recovery.
For Fernandez, the walkover provided a place in the last four without having to play the quarter-final. However, the tournament lost one of its biggest attractions, as the world number one had been among the leading contenders for the title.
Rybakina's withdrawal also highlights the physical demands placed on elite players, who often compete across different countries and surfaces throughout the year. Maintaining consistency requires not only technical ability and preparation but also careful management of injuries, recovery periods and tournament schedules.
VoS STRATEGIC INSIGHT
Rybakina's decision demonstrates how protecting long-term fitness can become more important than pursuing another tournament victory. Having already secured the year-end number one ranking, she has achieved one of the most important objectives of the season. Continuing to compete with a persistent injury could have affected her preparation for the remaining major events.
Her 2026 achievements also underline the importance of consistency across the tennis calendar. Winning major championships and maintaining a leading position in the rankings requires sustained performance against the strongest players in the world. Her success at the Australian Open and US Open, alongside other tournament victories, reflects a season of significant competitive achievement.
The coming weeks will therefore be important for Rybakina and her team. A successful recovery would allow her to approach the WTA Finals with the opportunity to conclude the season on court. Her situation will also be watched by tennis followers interested in whether the newly confirmed world number one can maintain her form after the injury setback.
