University of York Opens Mumbai Campus as First Cohort of Students Begins Studies

The new University of York Mumbai campus is part of a wider expansion of overseas universities in India. The University of York had received approval from India's University Grants Commission to establish the campus, paving the way for its opening in 2026.

The move comes as India continues to open its higher-education sector to international universities. Regulations introduced in 2023 allow eligible foreign institutions to establish campuses in the country, with the policy aimed in part at expanding access to higher education and increasing international academic collaboration. Reuters reported earlier this year that 19 foreign universities were planning Indian campuses, including nine from the United Kingdom.

York's Mumbai campus is part of a broader shift in how British universities are engaging with India's large and growing student population. Rather than requiring students to travel to Britain, overseas campuses allow universities to deliver programmes within India.

Reuters reported that the University of Southampton had already opened its Indian campus, while other British institutions including York and Surrey were developing their own operations. The report also noted that foreign university degrees in India are required to meet the standards of their home-country programmes.

For students, the development provides another pathway to study with an overseas university while remaining in India. Reuters reported that fees at new international campuses can be lower than the fees charged to international students studying in Britain, although the exact cost varies by university and programme.

The Mumbai launch also comes amid broader efforts to deepen education links between Britain and India. Reuters reported that education was a major element of the two countries' efforts to strengthen bilateral relations, while several British universities have been exploring campuses and partnerships across India.
