‘Angh’ is set in Nagaland in north-east India and focuses on an ageing Konyak village chief and his son during the 1960s. The story explores the changing traditional life of the community as it encounters outside influences, including the arrival of an American Christian missionary.

The film's Platform Prize victory at TIFF is significant because the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences introduced new eligibility rules for the 99th Academy Awards. Under the revised system, certain non-English-language films can qualify for consideration by winning designated awards at major international film festivals.

The Toronto Platform Prize is one of the awards recognised under this new pathway. As a result, ‘Angh’ can enter the Oscar consideration process independently rather than relying solely on India's official national submission.

India's official submission for the Best International Feature Film category is the Marathi-language film ‘Gondhal’, which was selected from 33 films. The new rules mean that ‘Angh’ can nevertheless also enter consideration after its Toronto victory.

This creates an unusual situation for Indian cinema, with two Indian films able to enter the same Oscar category through different routes. ‘Gondhal’ represents India's official selection, while ‘Angh’ has gained eligibility through its international festival award.

The film marks the feature directorial debut of Theja Rio, who previously developed the story from a short-film project. Its setting in Nagaland also brings a relatively less represented region of India to international audiences.

The TIFF jury recognised the film for its filmmaking and its portrayal of a particular community and cultural world. The award has subsequently increased international attention around both the film and its director.

However, winning the Platform Prize does not mean that ‘Angh’ has received an Oscar nomination. The film must still pass through the Academy's subsequent selection process before the final nominees are determined.

The Academy's current timetable lists the international feature shortlist for 15 December 2026, with final nominations scheduled to be announced on 21 January 2027. The 99th Academy Awards are scheduled for March 2027.

The development highlights the growing international visibility of films made in regional Indian languages and demonstrates how changes to international film-award rules can create additional routes for productions to reach the Academy Awards.

VoS STRATEGIC INSIGHT

‘Angh’ demonstrates how international film festivals can provide an additional pathway for regional cinema to reach global audiences. Its TIFF award has secured eligibility for Oscar consideration, although the film's eventual progress will depend on the Academy's subsequent selection process.
