India and Pakistan Face Off in Asian Games Cricket Final With Gold Medal at Stake

VoS NEWS DESK | SPORT | 3 OCTOBER 2026

The final brings together two of cricket's most closely followed rivals in a match that carries the additional significance of an Asian Games gold medal.

India entered the tournament as the defending Asian Games champions after winning gold at the 2023 Hangzhou Games. Pakistan, meanwhile, are seeking their first Asian Games cricket gold after previously winning a bronze medal at Guangzhou in 2010.

Both teams progressed to the semi-finals after their quarter-final matches were affected by rain. India advanced after their quarter-final against Afghanistan was abandoned, while Pakistan also progressed after their match against Hong Kong, China was washed out.

India then produced a commanding semi-final performance against Sri Lanka, winning by 124 runs after Sri Lanka were dismissed for 45. Pakistan reached the final by defeating Bangladesh by six wickets in a semi-final reduced to 13 overs because of a wet outfield.

The final is being played in the Twenty20 format, meaning that each side has a maximum of 20 overs to score runs. The shorter format places particular importance on aggressive batting, efficient bowling and quick fielding.

India's squad includes established international names such as Jasprit Bumrah, Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel, alongside emerging players. Pakistan's squad includes players such as Sahibzada Farhan, Saim Ayub, Abdul Samad and Sufyan Moqim.

One of the players attracting particular attention is India's teenage batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who scored 38 runs in the semi-final against Sri Lanka. Ishan Kishan also played an important role, scoring an unbeaten 80 from 46 balls in that match.

For Pakistan, Sufyan Moqim was among the key performers in the semi-final against Bangladesh, taking three wickets, while Abdul Samad contributed an unbeaten 30 from only 15 deliveries.

The match also carries a wider historical context. India and Pakistan have a long-standing cricket rivalry, and meetings between the two sides regularly attract large international audiences.

The teams previously met during the 2026 T20 World Cup group stage, when India won by 61 runs. Pakistan's most recent T20I victory over India came in the 2022 Asia Cup semi-final.

Weather could also play a role. Rain has already disrupted several matches during the cricket competition. According to the tournament arrangements reported ahead of the final, if the gold-medal match is abandoned because of rain, the two teams would share the gold medal.

The Asian Games final therefore combines a major sporting prize with one of cricket's most recognisable rivalries, making it one of the most closely followed events of the Games.
