The Ali al-Taher ridge, located near Nabatiyeh in southern Lebanon, has become one of the most important flashpoints between Israel and Hezbollah. Its elevated position provides strategic visibility over surrounding areas, while the tunnel network beneath the ridge has been described by Israeli officials as an important part of Hezbollah's military infrastructure.

The Israeli military said it had cleared Hezbollah fighters from the tunnels beneath the ridge and established operational control over the area. With the new academic year approaching, many displaced children face further disruption to their education.

The continuing violence is also creating difficulties for the Lebanese government, which faces pressure to strengthen state control over southern Lebanon while dealing with the presence of armed Hezbollah forces and Israeli military positions.

International mediators, including the United States, are attempting to prevent the situation from developing into another full-scale war. Diplomatic proposals have included transferring control of strategic areas to the Lebanese army and reducing Hezbollah's military presence, but major disagreements remain.

The wider regional situation is adding further uncertainty. US and Iranian forces exchanged fire near Iranian waters on Saturday, while the United States also carried out strikes on Iranian oil tankers after accusing Iran of attacking US Navy vessels. The escalation has increased fears that developments in Lebanon could become linked to the broader US-Iran confrontation.

For Israel, control of the Ali al-Taher ridge could strengthen its military position in southern Lebanon and increase pressure on Hezbollah during negotiations. For Hezbollah and Iran, however, any further Israeli advance could be viewed as a major escalation requiring a response.

The coming days will therefore be closely watched by regional governments and international mediators. Any significant expansion of Israeli operations, Hezbollah retaliation or direct Iranian involvement could place the fragile ceasefire under severe pressure.
