Pakistan Hosts Historic High-Level Committee to Mediate U.S.-Iran Islamabad MoU

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) of Pakistan has officially solidified the nation's role as a major diplomatic mediator on the global stage following the electronic signing of the historic "Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding" between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran. Handled under the close supervision of the Prime Minister and top diplomatic cadres, the breakthrough agreement has positioned Pakistan as a pivotal neutral ground for international de-escalation. Following the signing, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, accompanied by senior defense and diplomatic delegations, traveled to Bürgenstock, Switzerland, to co-host the first formal High-Level Committee Meeting under the framework alongside Qatar to bridge the technical divide between Washington and Tehran.

Concurrently, Pakistan’s diplomatic missions have dramatically accelerated regional engagement to secure lasting structural support for the agreement. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar led a high-profile Pakistani delegation to Cairo, Egypt, to participate in the 4th R-4 Ministerial Meeting. Convening alongside the Foreign Ministers of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Türkiye, the diplomatic mission resulted in a joint statement from the four major regional powers, who praised Pakistan’s instrumental role in reaching this historic outcome. This concerted diplomatic push comes at a crucial time as technical teams from Islamabad and Doha prepare to navigate complex upcoming negotiations regarding nuclear frameworks and frozen assets in the ensuing weeks, ensuring that energy markets, international maritime routes, and global supply chains are insulated from further regional instability.

Beyond these high-level macro-negotiations, Pakistan's foreign missions have simultaneously proven their effectiveness in handling humanitarian and multilateral security operations globally. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs recently coordinated a complex diplomatic and consular effort across East Africa, sending an embassy team from Djibouti to Mogadishu to actively engage with Somali authorities for the safe release of Pakistani nationals taken hostage on a hijacked merchant vessel. Furthermore, on the multilateral front, a joint initiative spearheaded by the diplomatic missions of Pakistan and Denmark successfully passed UN Security Council Resolution 2823 with a record-breaking 153 co-sponsors. The resolution marks a landmark achievement for Pakistan’s global standing, establishing stringent international legal frameworks to enforce accountability for crimes committed against United Nations peacekeepers.
